Russia orders massive strikes on Ukraine energy infrastructure
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the military to prepare massive strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, characterizing the move as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian fuel and energy facilities. Putin also stated that any foreign military facilities in Ukraine, including British ones, are legitimate targets. In the Donetsk region, Russia claims to have occupied 270 square kilometers of territory during August.
Simultaneously, Ukraine is facing severe domestic challenges. Attacks on retail warehouses have reportedly damaged approximately 90% of the country's retail warehouse infrastructure, leading to empty supermarket shelves in major cities like Kyiv and Lviv. This disruption to the logistics chain is complicating food supplies and increasing costs. Additionally, utility prices have surged, with an average increase of 52% during the first two months of summer.
In Odesa, recent Russian strikes damaged residential buildings and infrastructure, resulting in eight injuries. Amidst these escalations, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has called on the European Union to tighten sanctions against Russia and increase defense and energy assistance ahead of the winter months.
