Russia intensifies ties with Global South via diplomacy and energy

Russia is intensifying its engagement with the Global South through a combination of high-level diplomacy, energy cooperation, and human connection initiatives. President Vladimir Putin recently conducted a diplomatic tour, meeting with approximately 18 heads of state across locations including Kyrgyzstan, India, and Russia’s Far East. These discussions focused heavily on fuel, trade, and transit, as Russia seeks to expand energy exports and secure strategic partnerships despite Western isolation efforts.

Key energy developments include the push to finalize the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline to deliver natural gas to China via Mongolia, and the establishment of a new strategic oil reserves hub in Vietnam. Additionally, Russia is expanding nuclear power cooperation with partners such as Turkey.

Beyond official statecraft, Russia is utilizing employment programs like AlabugaStart to foster soft power. These initiatives bring young workers from countries such as Sri Lanka to Russia, helping to address domestic staffing needs while building personal and cultural ties between Russian citizens and foreign nationals.
