Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute researcher death sparks international concern

The death of 28-year-old laboratory researcher Daria Shipilova at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia has triggered international concern and calls for transparency from the World Health Organization (WHO). While initial reports and local speculation suggested a possible laboratory accident involving pneumonic plague bacteria, Russian health authorities, including Rospotrebnadzor, have officially attributed her death to pneumonia of unknown etiology.

Russian officials state that no plague cases have been recorded and that extensive testing—comprising over 5,000 clinical analyses—found no dangerous pathogens. Following the incident, approximately 200 contacts were placed under medical observation, but authorities have since concluded that most have completed their monitoring without symptoms. Regional Governor Igor Kobzev confirmed that the epidemiological situation remains stable and that the researcher was vaccinated and possessed immunity against the pathogens she studied.

The WHO is currently seeking more detailed information from Russia regarding the laboratory's safety protocols, the specific microorganisms involved, and the health status of those in quarantine to conduct a full risk assessment. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has dismissed reports of a second potential case as false.
