Russia invests in agricultural genomics to boost food security

Russia is aggressively investing in agricultural research and biotechnology to establish itself as a global agricultural superpower. Through the development of the PUSK platform at Timiryazev University, the country aims to accelerate the market release of new seed varieties and hybrids.

This strategy focuses on genomic selection, utilizing whole-genome analysis and genetic markers to identify traits such as high yield, drought resistance, and climate adaptability. By controlling the entire production chain—including seeds, genetics, and technology—Russia is treating food security as a matter of national security and economic power. This approach contrasts with the European agricultural sector, which currently faces challenges including environmental regulations, rising costs, and demographic shifts.
