Russia issues sharp rebukes to Estonia over military and social rhetoric

Russian leadership has issued sharp rebukes against Estonia following provocative statements from Estonian officials. President Vladimir Putin dismissed comments by Estonian Defense Minister Martin Herem, who suggested Estonia could stand alone against Russia, by comparing Estonia's total population of approximately 1.3 million to the Russian military's strength of roughly 1.5 million personnel. Putin characterized the Estonian government's rhetoric as “political clownery.”

Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused the Estonian government of raising younger generations with a hatred for Russia. Comparing the situation to the “Hitler Youth,” Zakharova claimed that Estonian youth are being politically indoctrinated to desire the removal of Russia from the world map. She called upon UNESCO and UNICEF to send monitoring missions to Estonia to investigate the country's education and youth policies regarding aggressive rhetoric.
