Zaporizhzhia hit by Russian drones, damaging university and shopping mall
Russian drone and missile strikes targeted the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday night, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure. The bombardment hit two high-rise residential buildings, a shopping mall, and a historic university building originally constructed in 1902. At least five people were reported injured in the Zaporizhzhia strikes, with emergency services evacuating 14 individuals from affected sites.
The escalation follows a massive drone barrage launched by Ukrainian forces against Russia, which included over 1,000 drones. In response, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its air defenses downed 244 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black Sea.
Beyond Zaporizhzhia, Russia struck nine other Ukrainian regions. In the Odessa region, food warehouses belonging to a supermarket chain caught fire following the attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the continued escalation signals Russia's readiness to expand the conflict, even as world leaders convene for the UN General Assembly in New York.
