Russia launches massive strike on Ukraine energy infrastructure
Russia has launched its largest attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure since the spring, targeting 11 regions across the country. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi reported that the combined strikes hit critical infrastructure, including residential buildings, social facilities, and railway lines.
In the Kyiv region, the strikes caused significant damage. The operator of the Trypilska thermal power plant, Centrenergo, confirmed the facility was damaged. Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed the strikes targeted the plant, as well as the De Novo data center and the Vyshhorod hydroelectric power plant to disrupt military-industrial energy supplies.
The attacks resulted in at least five deaths, including a child in the Kyiv region. Widespread power outages were reported in the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. The private energy company DTEK managed to restore electricity to approximately 8,000 homes following the initial impact.
Due to the reduced supply, the state grid operator Ukrenergo has advised residents to limit the use of high-consumption electrical devices between 10:00 and 16:00 local time. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that critical infrastructure was also hit in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and Rivne regions.
