Russia to supply diesel to global markets following US agreement
Following an agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia is set to resume diesel exports to global markets, including direct shipments to the United States. The deal aims to stabilize energy prices and reduce the cost of living for Americans, particularly farmers and truck drivers.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that initial deliveries of over 300,000 tons of diesel will occur shortly, with volumes potentially reaching 3 to 3.5 million tons per month by the end of the year. This would return Russian supply levels to those seen prior to Western sanctions. The US Treasury has issued a temporary waiver allowing these imports until April 2027.
The arrangement has drawn significant criticism from European leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who argue the deal provides financial legitimacy to Moscow during the ongoing conflict. Additionally, the Trump administration is considering easing sanctions on the ‘shadow fleet’ of tankers to increase maritime availability and lower transport costs, though officials noted this measure is intended to target non-sanctioned oil and would not assist Russia in transporting sanctioned crude oil.
