Russia-linked disinformation aimed at Germany's AfD ahead of Berlin election

Analyst Karolin Schwarz warned that Russia is likely to spread disinformation before the Berlin state election, describing the AfD as a “Putin ally.” She cited frequent trips by AfD officials to Russia and warned that fake AI‑generated videos could be used to sow distrust, though she noted many such attempts may have little impact on voter behavior. The German domestic security office also cautioned that the Kremlin seeks to influence public opinion.

In response to such threats, the Viadrina University in Frankfurt (Oder) announced a new master's programme, “Conflict and Democracy,” intended to train professionals to counter authoritarian manipulation. The curriculum focuses on how Russia and the AfD exploit societal conflicts for polarisation and aims to equip graduates for work in academia, NGOs, local government and community organisations.
