Russia loses nearly 1.5 million soldiers in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian military

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports that Russia has lost approximately 1,475,270 soldiers since the start of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,240 Russian casualties recorded in a single day.

In addition to personnel, the report details extensive military equipment losses for Russia, including 12,292 tanks, 25,176 armored fighting vehicles, 439 aircraft, 354 helicopters, and over 474,000 drones. Other significant losses include 48,382 artillery systems and 1,584 air defense systems.

While Ukraine maintains operational secrecy regarding its own losses, Western research centers such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimate Russian casualties exceed Ukrainian ones by a ratio of approximately 2:1 or 2.5:1. A CSIS report suggests Ukraine may have suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties between February 2022 and December 2025, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stating at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in action.
