Russia missile and drone attack kills at least 16 in Kyiv region

A massive Russian aerial bombardment targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region has killed at least 16 people and wounded approximately 40 others. The attack, which lasted several hours, utilized a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and jet-powered drones.

Ukrainian officials reported that the strikes hit at least 28 locations across the country. Among the damaged civilian infrastructure were a children's hospital, a school, and residential buildings. During the height of the raid, more than 38,000 people, including over 2,000 children, sought shelter in Kyiv's subway stations.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia deployed a significant arsenal, including 168 drones and at least 46 missiles. While Ukrainian defenses successfully intercepted a large number of projectiles, including 31 missiles and 145 drones, several impacts were recorded.

In response to the escalation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his plea for international partners to provide more Patriot air defense interceptors, noting that current stockpiles are insufficient to counter high-speed ballistic missiles. The attack also triggered air defense alerts in neighboring Poland and Romania.
