Russia modernizes air raid shelters in Moscow and Saint Petersburg

Russia is conducting unannounced renovations of air raid shelters in Moscow and Saint Petersburg amid increased Ukrainian drone strikes. State procurement data reveals significant funding being directed toward civil defense infrastructure.

In Moscow, 39 million rubles (approximately 400,000 euros) have been allocated for the repair of nine facilities in three districts of the southwest administrative region, an area housing numerous research institutes and defense contractors. These works, which include upgrading entrances, walls, doors, and essential utilities like water, electricity, and ventilation, are expected to be completed by November 30.

Additional funding is earmarked for eastern Moscow, including a major overhaul of a 1971 bunker in New Moscow that features its own diesel power plant. Earlier this summer, the city issued tenders worth 200 million rubles (2 million euros) for repairs across 17 districts.

In Saint Petersburg, the metro operator has initiated a project to construct bomb shelters at nine stations and along 35 kilometers of track. These upgrades aim to bring existing and new stations into compliance with civil defense regulations, specifically regarding air filtration and overpressure air supply systems.
