Russia modernizes secret Kosvinsky Kamen nuclear bunker

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been overseeing the modernization of a secret, Cold War-era command center located deep within the Kosvinsky Kamen mountain in the Urals. Known as Facility 1335, the site is buried under more than 1,000 feet of solid granite, providing protection against advanced American bunker-buster bombs.

Investigations indicate that the Russian Ministry of Defense has been working on a major upgrade project at the facility since 2018. The site is part of the Kremlin’s Perimeter system, referred to in the West as ‘Dead Hand,’ designed to ensure that Moscow’s nuclear forces can be activated even in the event of an atomic war.

Newly released images and procurement contracts from 2018 to 2024 reveal the scale of the facility, which includes at least 24 underground rooms and tunnels extending approximately 1.5 miles from the entrances. The bunker is intended to guarantee mutually assured destruction in the event of a conflict with Western powers.
