Russia-NATO tensions rise amid concerns over military capacity

Tensions between Russia and NATO have escalated as Western leaders express growing concern over potential direct conflict. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that Russia may target NATO territory with drones or missiles, potentially claiming such strikes were accidental. Additionally, Czech intelligence officials suggest that the timeframe for such provocations could be months rather than years.

Despite these warnings, analysts question Russia's capacity to sustain a large-scale war against the NATO alliance. Data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) indicates significant military attrition in Ukraine. Between February 2022 and June 2026, Russia reportedly suffered 1.4 million total casualties, including 450,000 deaths. Current monthly losses are estimated between 30,000 and 34,000 personnel, while recruitment rates are noted to be significantly lower at approximately 27,000 per month.
