Russia-NATO tensions rise following CIA Director's Moscow visit

Following a visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe in August 2026, concerns have emerged regarding potential Russian military escalations against NATO members. While Baltic states like Estonia and Latvia report no evidence of a full-scale invasion buildup, analysts suggest Russia could pursue limited conventional operations to test NATO's Article 5 commitments.

One such scenario involves a limited attack on Narva, an Estonian border town, using tactical drones to disrupt alliance cohesion without attempting full territorial conquest. This follows diplomatic efforts in Moscow, including a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who were tasked with discussing ways to end the war in Ukraine.

Russian leadership has maintained strict conditions for peace, including preventing Ukraine from joining NATO, limiting Ukraine's military capacity, and the permanent annexation of controlled territories. In response to these developments, NATO members have met to discuss increasing military readiness and deepening intelligence cooperation to counter potential cyber and conventional threats.
