Russia-North Korea road bridge raises Ukrainian security concerns

Construction of the first road bridge linking Russia’s Khasan and North Korea’s Tumangang across the Tumen River has progressed, with the main 850‑metre span already completed. The corridor, about 4.7 km long, will feature two lanes and handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,850 people daily, aiming to boost trade, tourism and road access to the North Korean Rason region.

Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, warn the bridge could serve as a logistical corridor for Russian and North Korean military movements, noting that road traffic is harder to monitor by satellite than the existing railway link. Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin emphasised the project’s commercial purpose, despite the modest bilateral trade of $34 million in 2024 versus a construction cost exceeding $100 million. The bridge’s opening, initially slated for June 2026, has been delayed as Russian customs facilities remain unfinished.
