Trump announces Russian diesel deal amid international backlash

Donald Trump has announced an agreement with Vladimir Putin to increase Russian diesel supplies to global markets, aiming to lower fuel prices for consumers. The deal, facilitated by a temporary U.S. Treasury license, expects to bring 300,000 tonnes of diesel to markets in October, 500,000 in November, and one million in December. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak indicated that total monthly supplies could eventually reach 3.5 million tonnes.

The announcement has caused significant diplomatic friction. European leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have criticized the move as a dangerous decision that provides legitimacy and revenue to Moscow to fund the war in Ukraine. Similarly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed surprise and concern, viewing the deal as a gift to Putin.

While Trump maintains that an energy ceasefire is in effect and that the U.S. is working with both sides to end the conflict, the Kremlin has not officially confirmed the ceasefire. Meanwhile, Russian forces have continued strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, including a drone attack on a residential building in Kyiv that killed one person. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has also urged the administration to reverse the deal, citing potential violations of existing laws.
