Russia plans 2030 Bion-M 3 satellite launch to study deep-space radiation
Russia's Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP RAS), led by Vladimir Sychov, has received official approval to launch the Bion-M 3 biological satellite in 2030. The spacecraft will be placed in a polar orbit at roughly 800 km altitude, where Earth's magnetic shield is weakened, creating radiation conditions similar to deep space. The mission will expose genetically diverse test organisms to high levels of cosmic radiation to gather data on cellular and neurological effects, aiming to improve models of human radiation tolerance for future crewed missions beyond low‑Earth orbit, such as to the Moon and Mars.
The project is part of Russia's long‑term space exploration strategy and follows earlier Bion missions that used genetically uniform laboratory animals. By using a broader range of genetic profiles, scientists hope to better understand individual variability in radiation response, informing safety measures for upcoming deep‑space flights.
