Russia plans 4,370km high-capacity power transmission project
Following orders from President Vladimir Putin, Russia has announced a major energy infrastructure project to construct 4,370km of direct current (DC) power transmission lines. The project, which aims for a capacity of up to 1.5 GW, is scheduled to take place between 2030 and 2036 as part of five distinct projects.
The initiative is a key component of the Russian Energy Strategy 2050, approved by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The government expects to receive development and technology implementation proposals from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the Kurchatov National Research Center by December 27, 2029.
Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev stated that the project is intended to modernize the industry, ensure reliable energy supplies, and increase domestic equipment production. The transmission lines are expected to balance electricity loads across different time zones, reduce costs, and mitigate local power shortages for major industrial facilities.
