Russia plans Ukraine escalation as peace talks reach deadlock

Russia is reportedly planning to escalate its military campaign in Ukraine following the collapse of diplomatic negotiations. According to sources close to the Kremlin cited by Bloomberg, Moscow is considering intensifying conventional ballistic missile strikes against Kyiv, including its city center, and targeting critical infrastructure in other Ukrainian cities.

Reports indicate that the Kremlin views recent peace negotiation frameworks as having reached a dead end, effectively returning both parties to their original positions. Despite ongoing economic sanctions and Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy and logistics networks, President Vladimir Putin is not expected to end the invasion.

Within Russia, some officials are reportedly advocating for the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons as a last resort. Meanwhile, market indicators show a rising probability of a direct military clash between NATO and Russia, with odds for such a conflict by the end of 2026 reaching 29.5%.
