Russia prepares up to 20,000 hospital beds for military use

Reports from Russian military circles suggest that civilian hospitals in northwestern Russia are being prepared to provide between 16,000 and 20,000 additional hospital beds for military patients by autumn 2026.

Security experts and politicians are analyzing the potential implications of this mobilization. Three primary scenarios have been proposed: the need to accommodate high casualty rates from the ongoing war in Ukraine, preparations for a coordinated escalation against individual NATO states on Russia's western border, or a strategic intimidation signal intended to unsettle the West and undermine support for Ukraine.

In response to regional tensions, Germany and Sweden are conducting the NATO exercise ‘Silver Wotan’ on the strategically significant island of Gotland. The German military identifies Gotland as key terrain for NATO, as control over the island impacts Baltic Sea movement and the supply lines of Baltic states.
