Russia proposes expanding UN Security Council representation

Russia has proposed expanding the representation of the ‘global majority’ within the United Nations Security Council. Kiril Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that reform should focus on increasing the presence of countries from Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Logvinov suggested that some nations from these regions could potentially obtain permanent seats. This proposal comes during the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, an event attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The debate regarding Security Council reform has persisted for decades as nations seek to adapt the body to the modern international system. The Council currently consists of 15 members: five permanent members (China, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia) and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
