Russia and Germany may collaborate to reopen Nord Stream pipelines
Kirill Dmitriev, the special envoy for the Russian President and Director General of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), has suggested that Russia and Germany could collaborate to reopen the Nord Stream gas pipelines. This proposal follows a response to Tino Chrupalla, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, who called for an international investigation into the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 lines.
The pipelines suffered unprecedented damage on September 26, 2022, when three of the four branches were compromised. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has classified the incident as an act of international terrorism. Chrupalla has emphasized the need for the pipelines to be repaired and reactivated to ensure Germany's energy sovereignty and prosperity.
Historically, the Nord Stream infrastructure was vital to the German economy, with the capacity to deliver up to 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The sabotage occurred while the lines were not in operation, but the damage was extensive.
