Russia proposes Ukraine become a buffer zone amid escalating tensions

Tensions continue to escalate regarding the geopolitical future of Ukraine and the broader security of Europe. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has proposed that Ukraine should become a ‘buffer zone,’ stating that Moscow does not support a peace settlement that leaves the current government in power. Lavrov also reiterated President Vladimir Putin’s warnings to Europe regarding the potential for a ‘very different and very short’ war in the event of an attack on Russia.

In response to the deteriorating situation on the ground, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has proposed several measures to the European Union to increase Ukraine’s strategic value beyond its role as an anti-Russian proxy. These include minimizing entry visas for Russians, severing all trade with Russia, and ending cultural cooperation and media access.

Analysts suggest that as Ukraine faces military exhaustion and internal pressure, European allies may attempt to draw the United States into a more direct confrontation to prevent a total Ukrainian collapse. This strategy aims to create enough political pressure and incident-driven commitment to make U.S. withdrawal appear more dangerous than intervention, despite Europe's current lack of independent military and industrial capacity to lead such an escalation.
