Russia warns Japan over U.S. missile deployment in upcoming military drills
Russia has issued a formal warning to Japan regarding the upcoming Orient Shield joint military exercises, scheduled to run from September 8 to September 24. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow submitted a protest to the Japanese Embassy on August 31, labeling military activities near Russia's eastern borders as “absolutely unacceptable.”
The tension is heightened by the planned participation of approximately 3,700 personnel from Japan, the United States, and Australia. For the first time, the exercises are expected to include the deployment of the American Typhon mid-range missile system, which is capable of launching Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles.
Russia warned that the deployment of such weaponry on Japanese territory constitutes a threat to its national security and cautioned that Moscow may implement “compensatory countermeasures” to protect its interests. The exercises are expected to take place in areas including Hokkaido and regions near the Russian Far East.
