Russia pulls out of 2027 World Volleyball Championship in Poland

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) confirmed that the Russian men’s volleyball team has voluntarily withdrawn from the 2027 World Championship scheduled in Poland, citing security concerns and the expectation that the event would be heavily politicised. The Russian federation said the decision was made to avoid potential visa and safety issues for its athletes.

Despite the withdrawal, the team has been reinstated to the world ranking at third place and will take part in the 2027 Nations League, which has been expanded to accommodate Russia as a 19th team. The move follows the International Olympic Committee’s recommendation to lift sanctions on Russian sport bodies. Russian officials, including Sports Minister Mikhail Diegtiarov, welcomed the decision, noting that the team can still qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games via its ranking. Discussions continue about the possible participation of the Russian women’s team in the 2027 women’s World Championship to be held in the United States and Canada.
