Russia: Putin signals readiness for Kyiv talks after election victory

Following the landslide victory of the United Russia party in recent parliamentary elections, President Vladimir Putin has signaled a readiness to resume negotiations with Kyiv, provided Russia's interests are met. The election results, which granted the ruling party a supermajority, are viewed by analysts as a mechanism to reinforce domestic legitimacy for the ongoing military operations in Ukraine.

Reports suggest the election outcome was bolstered by controlled voting in state-dependent organizations, the military, and law enforcement structures, alongside the exclusion of anti-war opposition parties. While the Kremlin aims to project a message of total domestic unity and strength, polling data from the Levada Center indicates a more complex reality, showing a decline in the percentage of citizens who view the military operation as successful.

Regarding the conflict, Putin stated that Russia is prepared for peace talks but warned that Ukraine will face consequences for attacks on civilian infrastructure, specifically citing strikes on retail depots. He emphasized that while Russia is not preparing for hostility with Europe, it remains attentive to the treatment of Russian speakers in the Baltic states.
