Russia readies RS-28 Sarmat ICBM test around Victory Day

Russia is preparing a test of its intercontinental ballistic missile RS-28 Sarmat, known in the West as “Satan II”. Western observers say the launch could occur as early as the coming weekend, timed to coincide with the May 9 Victory Day celebrations that commemorate the Soviet defeat of Nazi Germany. The Sarmat is designed to replace older R‑36M2 missiles and can carry up to ten nuclear warheads, making it a cornerstone of Moscow’s strategic deterrent.

The planned test follows a series of technical setbacks, including a recent failure that resulted in the missile crashing shortly after liftoff.
