Russia and Iran reaffirm strategic partnership amid growing cooperation

Russia and Iran have reaffirmed their strategic partnership, with Dmitry Medvedev stating that Moscow will not sacrifice its relationship with Tehran for any other nation. Medvedev emphasized that bilateral cooperation is expanding across several critical sectors, including nuclear energy, the oil industry, trade, and agriculture. He noted that trade between the two countries grew by more than 20 percent last year.

Infrastructure development is a key component of this deepening tie, specifically the construction of the Rasht–Astara railway. This project, part of the International North-South Transport Corridor, aims to create a continuous rail link from Russia and the Caucasus through Azerbaijan and Iran to the port of Bandar Abbas.

On the diplomatic front, Russia and China recently used their veto power at the UN Security Council to block a U.S.-proposed resolution aimed at extending a sanctions monitoring panel for Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have addressed tensions regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the strait will remain closed until seven specific conditions from the Islamabad Memorandum are met, though Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested a proposed plan could lead to its reopening within seven days.
