Russia declares Bashar al-Assad's political asylum is final

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgi Borisenko has declared that Moscow's decision to grant political asylum to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is final and irrevocable. The asylum was granted on humanitarian grounds following the collapse of al-Assad's government in December 2024.

Borisenko stated that the current Syrian authorities in Damascus are fully aware of Russia's position. While political dialogue between Moscow and the new Syrian administration remains active—noting that President Ahmed al-Sharaa has visited Russia twice—economic cooperation is currently described as stagnant.

Regarding military presence, Russia expects to sign new agreements by the end of the year to regulate the joint use of the Khmeimim airbase and the Tartus naval base. These agreements aim to reorganize the Russian military presence in Syria, potentially transitioning facilities into training and rehabilitation centers while allowing Syrian management of civilian infrastructure.
