Russia rejects Ukraine ceasefire proposal amid US envoy visit

A proposed mutual ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, intended to run from September 5 to September 9, has failed to materialize after Russia declined to participate. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, stated that the proposal—which called for a temporary halt to both aerial strikes and frontline combat operations—was communicated directly to President Vladimir Putin but received no response.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed its refusal to observe the truce, continuing overnight combined strikes across Ukraine. These attacks included a ballistic missile strike on an industrial enterprise in the Kamianske region, resulting in five deaths and five injuries. The Armed Forces of Ukraine noted that a unilateral ceasefire is not feasible due to the operational risks posed to military personnel.

The failed initiative coincided with the scheduled arrival of US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. While hostilities continue, Budanov speculated that Russian forces might refrain from striking the capital, Kyiv, during the envoys' visit.
