Russia reports net territorial losses in Ukraine for second consecutive month

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces experienced a net territorial loss of 27.29 square kilometers in Ukraine during October. While Russian troops gained or consolidated control over 139.85 square kilometers, they lost control of 167.14 square kilometers, marking the second consecutive month of net territorial decline.

Russian gains were limited to the Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions, while Ukrainian forces gained initiative in the areas of Kupiansk, Lyman, and Oleksandrivka. In the Donetsk region, which remains a primary operational target for Moscow, Russian forces were losing territory.

Data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine indicates that Russia suffered 54,400 killed or seriously wounded soldiers in October. This represents the highest monthly casualty figure since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 and the fourth consecutive month with losses exceeding 40,000 personnel. The ISW notes that these figures suggest the Russian recruitment system is struggling to replace current losses, even as Russian command continues to concentrate forces in specific directions like Dobropil.
