Russia requests bans on protests near embassies during Duma elections

The Russian Federation has issued diplomatic notes to foreign governments requesting the prohibition of demonstrations near its embassies during the upcoming elections to the State Duma, scheduled for September 18–20. Maksim Raider, vice-chairman of the election commission at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that these measures are intended to protect polling stations and ensure security.

In Finland, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirmed receipt of a note requesting strengthened security measures and a temporary ban on demonstrations near the Russian Embassy in Helsinki. The Finnish government has not yet announced its official response to these requests.

Russian officials expressed concerns regarding potential provocations and rallies in support of Ukraine at diplomatic missions abroad. Meanwhile, Ella Pamfilova, chair of Russia’s Central Election Commission, suggested that Russians who have “left” or “betrayed the country” should be deprived of their right to vote. The elections will involve over 300 polling stations across 152 countries.
