Russia revises gas output forecasts amid US sanctions risks

Russia is revising its natural gas production and export forecasts downward. According to a draft government document, Russian natural gas production this year is projected to reach 683.1 billion cubic metres, a decrease from previous projections. Seaborne liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports are also expected to rise at a slower pace than previously anticipated, reaching an estimated 35 million tons this year.

Simultaneously, the European Union faces potential energy supply disruptions due to the Lindsey Graham Sanctions Act signed by US President Donald Trump. The act allows for tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue to purchase Russian oil or natural gas. While the EU is attempting to phase out Russian energy and refill gas storage to 80% by November, these new US sanctions create uncertainty for European companies and governments still exposed to Russian gas markets.

The European Commission has stated it expects the new US law not to impose new commercial barriers on the bilateral EU-US relationship.
