Russia revives Tu-160M strategic bomber production

Russia is working to revive the production of the Tu-160M, a modernized version of the Soviet-era Tu-160 strategic supersonic bomber. Tupolev CEO Yuri Abrosimov stated that the aircraft is being built on a new technological foundation, with approximately 80 percent of its systems and equipment modernized through digital technologies.

The upgrade program includes new NK-32-02 engines, updated avionics, navigation equipment, communications systems, and weapons-control computers. While the aircraft retains its original variable-geometry wing configuration, the manufacturing process now utilizes a shared digital environment linking various design bureaux, including Sukhoi, Mikoyan, and Ilyushin.

However, the program faces significant industrial hurdles. Rebuilding the necessary infrastructure at the Kazan Aviation Plant requires recovering complex industrial technologies, such as electron beam welding and specialized vacuum metal treatment furnaces. The effort is further complicated by international sanctions that limit access to Western technology and equipment, forcing Russia to rely more heavily on domestic capabilities and alternative suppliers.
