Russia reroutes gold exports through Hong Kong to bypass sanctions
Russia has rerouted its gold exports through Hong Kong to bypass Western sanctions, according to reports citing the Financial Times. In the first seven months of 2026, nearly 100 tonnes of Russian gold entered Hong Kong, a record volume that is almost triple the pace recorded during the same period in 2025.
This shift follows the closure of major Western bullion markets, such as London, to Russian metal due to sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Kingdom. Unlike Western nations, China and Hong Kong have not imposed similar restrictions on Russian gold imports.
Hong Kong has emerged as a critical intermediary and logistics hub. Because mainland China imposes certain import quotas and restrictions on gold, Hong Kong allows Chinese entities to purchase and store bullion before it is moved into the mainland. Since the beginning of 2022, Hong Kong-based entities have reportedly purchased approximately $35 billion worth of Russian gold.
