Russia discusses potential transfer of S-400 systems from Turkey

Russia and Turkey are in discussions regarding the potential transfer of S-400 missile defense systems from Turkey to a third country. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov confirmed that the matter is on the agenda and that appropriate contacts are being made.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that while Moscow could consider such a proposal, any transfer requires official Russian approval. Lavrov emphasized that the recipient nation must be a responsible partner with friendly relations toward Russia. Furthermore, Moscow is seeking guarantees that the systems will not be re-transferred to a third party, specifically to prevent them from reaching Ukraine.

Turkey originally acquired the S-400 systems in 2017 for approximately $2.5 billion. The purchase caused significant diplomatic friction with the United States, leading to Turkey's removal from the F-35 fighter jet program and the imposition of sanctions. The United Arab Emirates has been mentioned in media reports as a potential destination for the systems, though Lavrov noted that no formal request has been received yet.
