Russia sees surge in emigration amid mobilization fears
A new wave of emigration is emerging from Russia as citizens flee due to political instability, economic concerns, and fears of further military mobilization. Following the initial mass exodus during the first year of the invasion of Ukraine, recent data suggests a significant uptick in people seeking to leave the country.
Anastasia Burakova, founder of the assistance group Kovtjeg, reported that inquiries regarding emigration increased nearly eightfold in August compared to May. Jan Slovitskij of Kovtjeg described the trend as a ‘panic wave’ that began in mid-July, driven primarily by fuel crises, internet restrictions, and the threat of mobilization.
Diplomatic reports indicate an increase in public anxiety, with anecdotal evidence of more Russians appearing in neighboring countries such as Georgia and Armenia. Armenian Security Council Secretary Alen Simonjan noted that while Armenia will not interfere, it may provide assistance to Russians migrating to the country.
