Robert Fico to visit Ukraine amid rising European security concerns

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced an upcoming visit to Ukraine to participate in a conference alongside other EU heads of government. During his announcement in Prešov, Fico expressed deep concerns regarding the escalating tension of the conflict, stating that the situation has never been as serious or volatile regarding the potential for a pan-European military conflict.

Fico noted his intention to ensure Slovakia is not drawn into a direct war, referencing NATO’s Article 5. He emphasized that while Slovakia respects its NATO obligations and commitment to cooperation, the risk of accidental escalation—such as a drone strike hitting a civilian area in a member state—is a grave concern.

During this visit, Fico is expected to meet with the new Ukrainian Prime Minister, Serhiy Koretsky. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also confirmed he will be in Ukraine on the same day to meet with Fico, where discussions regarding sanctions against Russia are also anticipated.
