Russia shifts to advanced Geran drones amid global missile shortages

Russia has reportedly ceased production of the Geran-3 kamikaze drone to focus on more advanced turbojet versions, specifically the Geran-4 and Geran-5 models. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, this shift aims to overcome Ukrainian air defenses, which currently intercept up to 96% of older piston-engine models. The Russian military-industrial complex is reportedly planning to produce 11,000 strike UAVs this month.

In Germany, lawmakers are discussing a major intelligence reform that could authorize the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) to conduct preemptive cyberattacks against Russian drone manufacturing facilities. This follows an incident at Leipzig airport involving a Russian drone.

Simultaneously, concerns are rising regarding a shortage of defensive missiles, particularly within the United States. Reports suggest significant depletion of THAAD missile defense stocks, which could impact military operations and the ability to protect allies. This ammunition shortage is directly affecting air defense capabilities in Ukraine and highlights a growing need for European strategic independence in missile systems.
