Russia signals readiness for ‘logical compromise’ in Ukraine negotiations

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed readiness for ‘logical compromises’ in negotiations with Ukraine, while maintaining that Moscow’s core objectives and terms for ending the conflict remain unchanged. Lavrov emphasized that Russia is open to diplomatic initiatives and is communicating its stance to American counterparts, though he expressed uncertainty regarding how this might influence practical US actions.

In a significant development, the Kremlin has indicated openness to a proposal by US President Donald Trump regarding a mutual moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine. However, Moscow has stipulated that any such agreement must be accompanied by the lifting of Western sanctions on Russian energy exports.

Despite the rhetoric of compromise, Lavrov clarified that Russia will not suspend its military operations even if peace talks commence, a position that directly contradicts Kyiv’s demand for an immediate ceasefire as a prerequisite for dialogue. Additionally, Lavrov is scheduled to hold a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
