Russia spreads disinformation targeting French presidential candidates

Russian military intelligence (GRU) through the pro‑Russian group “Storm‑1516” has orchestrated a coordinated disinformation operation aimed at three candidates in the upcoming French presidential election – former prime minister Eduard Filip, Kremlin‑critic Rafael Gluksmann and centrist Gabriel Atal. The campaign used fake websites, forged documents, deep‑fake video of journalist Édouard Plénel, and anonymous social‑media profiles that mimicked legitimate French media outlets.

French authorities, including the state agency Viginum, say the effort is a “preview” of a larger interference expected before the 2027 vote. Investigations have been opened, and Gluksmann warned that the attacks signal a more extensive Russian push. The operation highlights ongoing concerns about foreign digital meddling in democratic processes.
