Lithuania targeted in Russian state media article suggesting nuclear missile strike
Russian state news agency Ria Novosti briefly published an article by political commentator Aleksandr Nosovitj that suggested a new, short-lived military special operation in Lithuania. The piece, which was removed after appearing on the agency's front page, compared Lithuania to Ukraine and suggested that Russia could use nuclear-armed missiles rather than ground troops to conduct a conflict in the Baltics.
The publication follows recent moves by the Lithuanian parliament to amend the constitution to remove the ban on hosting foreign nuclear weapons. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda clarified that while there are no immediate plans to store nuclear weapons on Lithuanian soil, the constitutional change is intended to ensure the country is not restricted if geopolitical circumstances change in the future.
This incident coincides with warnings from Danish intelligence regarding a low but growing risk of a Russian attack on a NATO member in the coming months, potentially aimed at diverting European defense resources from Ukraine.
