Kyiv Northern Bridge struck by Russian drones during German Chancellor's visit

Russian drone strikes targeted the Northern Bridge in Kyiv on Sunday, damaging its roadway and trolleybus overhead lines. The attack, which occurred while vehicles were crossing, injured two people and damaged a heating main, potentially disrupting water supplies in the Desnianskyi district. This strike follows several attacks on the Southern Bridge earlier in the week.

The strikes coincided with an unannounced visit to Kyiv by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to underscore German support. Merz is expected to announce a $1.1 billion military aid package and $394 million for Ukraine's energy sector repairs. Discussions also included potential joint production of long-range drones.

Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed the Northern Bridge was targeted because it is used for military logistics and troop movements. In response to the escalating threats to the Dnipro River crossings, Ukrainian authorities are planning to construct alternative crossings, including pontoon bridges and embankments, to maintain connectivity between the city's banks.
