Russia and Denmark exchange diplomatic protests after Baltic Sea incident

Russia and Denmark have exchanged diplomatic protests following a maritime incident in the Baltic Sea on September 14. The encounter involved a Danish Fennec military helicopter and the Russian corvette Soobrazitelny in international waters near Gedser.

Russia summoned the Danish ambassador to Moscow, alleging that the helicopter performed dangerous, unprofessional, and provocative maneuvers at an altitude of less than 50 meters. Moscow claimed the aircraft ignored international radio warnings and characterized the actions as a violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. According to Russia, the corvette fired two signal flares in a direction away from the helicopter to draw its attention.

Denmark has rejected these claims, stating the helicopter was conducting routine photographic surveillance and did not approach the vessel closer than 150 meters. The Danish military reported that the Russian vessel fired two flares toward the helicopter, with one passing within 10 to 15 meters of the aircraft. Denmark also summoned the Russian ambassador in response to the incident.
