Russia targeting U.S. midterm elections with digital disinformation

U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that the Russian government has authorized a covert digital influence campaign aimed at undermining public confidence in the upcoming November midterm elections. According to officials, the Kremlin is using social media to spread or amplify inflammatory content intended to seed domestic divisions.

Recent observations by experts show the use of artificial intelligence to create fake videos of celebrities discussing key Senate races in battleground states. While the current operation appears less extensive or coordinated than previous Russian efforts, it follows a long-standing playbook used in federal election cycles since 2016.

Intelligence officials noted that while Moscow remains a threat, it may be less focused on midterm races than on presidential contests due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Crucially, assessments found no evidence of attempts to compromise actual voting machinery or the physical voting process.
