Russia targets Ukrainian data centers with drone strikes
Russia has intensified a campaign of drone and missile strikes targeting Ukrainian data centers and telecommunications infrastructure. Since late September, these attacks have focused heavily on the capital, Kyiv, and other regions, causing disruptions to mobile phone services, internet connectivity, and television streaming.
Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, have warned that these strikes aim to destabilize the country by disrupting the flow of information and threatening the digital economy. The outages affect critical services such as online banking, state registries, cloud services, and emergency communications. In the Kyiv region alone, initial strikes reportedly caused temporary internet outages for approximately 100,000 households.
While experts suggest a total internet blackout is unlikely due to the decentralized nature of Ukraine’s telecommunications sector, the concentrated pressure on multiple providers within short periods marks a significant escalation. Government officials are calling for increased air defense capabilities to protect these vital digital assets from further damage.
