Russia tests balloon barriers to counter advancing drone threats

Russia is testing new balloon-based barriers designed to defend facilities against Ukrainian drone attacks. The system utilizes multiple balloons connected by cables with suspended Kevlar threads. This barrier aims to entangle drone propellers to cause loss of control or to force drones to higher altitudes where they are more easily detected by radar and air defense systems. Designers indicate the technology is ready for mass production, noting that protecting a single large facility would require at least 10 balloons.

Simultaneously, the nature of drone warfare is evolving as Russia deploys faster, jet-powered drones such as the Geran-5, which can reach speeds of up to 375 mph. This increase in speed has strained Ukrainian air defenses and prompted a technological race. Ukrainian and Western defense firms are now rushing to develop next-generation interceptor drones capable of matching the speed of these new Russian threats to counter the rising percentage of jet-powered aerial attacks.
