Russia threatens seizure of Western cargo ships following EU shadow fleet sanctions
Russia has threatened to seize Western cargo ships in retaliation for European Union sanctions targeting its ‘shadow fleet’. Following a July sanctions package that allows EU member states to trade with cargo from seized Russian tankers, President Vladimir Putin characterized the seizure of Russian vessels by European nations as ‘piracy and banditry’. He warned that Moscow’s response would not be limited to specific locations but could occur in any strategic waters.
In response to these threats, the Commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet, Admiral Viktor Liina, confirmed that the military has obtained detailed movement data on Western commercial vessels. Concurrently, Russia has increased its naval presence in the Baltic Sea, deploying the Gorskov-class frigate Kasatonov Admiral—which is capable of launching Kalibr and Zircon missiles—following the previous deployment of the Levchenko Admiral destroyer.
Economic experts and shipping industry representatives have expressed concern, advising that the Kremlin’s signals should be taken seriously as they pose a direct threat to the stability of international commercial shipping and food security.
