Putin warns of nuclear response if Kaliningrad is attacked

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a warning that Russia may utilize all available military capabilities, including nuclear weapons, if its territory or the Kaliningrad enclave is directly attacked. Speaking at the annual Valdai Discussion Club forum, Putin stated that while Russia has no intention of attacking European nations, any direct aggression against Russian soil would necessitate a response involving its full arsenal.

The warning centers on the Kaliningrad enclave, a heavily militarized Russian territory on the Baltic Sea bordered by Poland and Lithuania. Putin specifically cited NATO military exercises in the Baltic Sea and attempts to intercept Russian vessels as escalatory actions. Moscow has expressed concern that NATO may attempt to isolate the enclave from the Russian mainland.

NATO officials have rejected the Kremlin's claims, characterizing the statements as irresponsible nuclear rhetoric. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte dismissed the threats, maintaining that the alliance's activities are defensive in nature and intended to protect member states.
